Kerry started out as a secondary school teacher and then worked in teacher education at Griffith University for ten years teaching sociology and philosophy of education. His research interest at the time was in the development of reformatory schools, an interest he was able to carry into the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice when he became one of the founding members. He is particularly interested in the content and evaluation of criminal justice education.
