Biography
Professor Joy Cumming is the Coordinator of the Griffith Social and Behavioural Research College, and Director of the Griffith–node of the Queensland Centre for Social Science Innovation. She has had a long career in education and education research, engaged as Chief Investigator in numerous state and federal funded research projects. Professor Cumming has held positions of Dean, Griffith Graduate Research School and standing acting Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research) (2005-9), and Head of School in the Faculty of Education (1995-2002), choosing to return to an academic research career from 2010. Her research has included work on adult and child literacy and numeracy, and assessment and accountability. She has been a consultant and policy advisor to state and federal government.
Current assessment research projects investigate teacher use of national assessment data to improve student learning (ARC Discovery Project), and the impact of assessment format on children’s demonstration of achievement and effective use of standardised test data to improve student learning.
More recently, Joy has completed law studies, and is an admitted lawyer in the Supreme Court of Queensland. Her education law research integrates her education expertise to focus on legal and policy issues in assessment and accountability. Current research examines teacher competency testing, discrimination and standardised assessment, and judicial interpretation of educational measurement statistical data.
She is co-editor, with Dr Elizabeth Dickson, of the International Journal of Law and Education (formerly Australia and New Zealand Journal of Law and Education), the journal of the Australia and New Zealand Education Law Association
