John Stevenson is currently an Adjunct Professor, working within the School of Education and Professional Studies and the Griffith Institute for Educational Research, Griffith University.
He was appointed to the foundation Chair of Post-compulsory Education and Training established by Griffith University in 1992. In his prior work and since then, he has led the international development of the field of vocational education and training as an area of systematic and rigorous research. His work is cited internationally in this field, in technology education, in cognitive psychology and in education more generally, for his contribution to understanding different ways of knowing in various fields of endeavour and the connections among them.
His other foundation appointments at Griffith University include Deputy Dean Research in the Faculty of Education, Director of the Centre for Learning Research and Director of the Centre for Skill Formation, Research and Development. As well, he had been foundation Head of numerous academic schools at Griffith University.
He was also the foundation editor of the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Vocational Education Research and the Australian Vocational Education Review.
His publication record includes: 5 books, 23 book chapters, 50 journal articles, 40 invited keynote and plenary addresses, 47 other conference papers, 3 public addresses and 3 major national and international reports. He has also secured research grants to centres he has led: $800,000; been a Chief Investigator on 3 Australian Research Council Grants: $200,000; been part of a team securing 2 other Australian Competitive Grants: $250,000; and secured International Research Grants in collaboration with a colleague: $48,000.
Prior to his work in higher education, Professor Stevenson held senior positions in the TAFE sector, including Director Educational Review and Enhancement, Assistant Director Curriculum, Principal Kangaroo Point College of TAFE and Officer-in-Charge, Sugar School.
