Biography

Louise Horstmanshof has a long-standing interest in cross-cultural affairs. She has presented papers at conferences in Hong Kong, Canada and Australia and her research into Homesickness, Personality and Cultural Differences has been published in academic journals. As a money market manager in South Africa, Louise worked with a cross-cultural team. She has worked as a volunteer for American Field Service over the past 20 years. As a “trailing spouse” herself, Louise has worked extensively with “trailing spouses” in different cultural settings dealing with transition, adjustment, and difficulties in intercultural communication.

Louise has lectured at Bond University in Intercultural Communications, at Southern Cross University in Counselling Skills and at Griffith University in Psychology, Business, Education, and Health. A registered psychologist, Louise holds memberships in the Australian Human Resources Institute, International Association of Applied Psychology, International Association for Cross-cultural Psychology and is a member of the Australian Psychological Society.

Her research interests include the first year experience, peer support programmes, postgraduate supervision and the use of Mobile phone technology. Louise holds a Bachelor of Arts from The University of Melbourne, a Graduate Diploma in Applied Psychology from The Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne and a Master of Organisational Psychology from Griffith University. She has just completed her Research PhD thesis which examined the influence of temporal orientation on student engagement in the first year at university.
