Biography
Dr Chalk obtained his bachelor degree (Computer Science) at Auckland before travelling to Sweden where he completed his Masters (Computer Science) and PhD (Functional Genomics) at Karolinska Instutute, Sweden. He has held postdoctoral positions at Karolinska University Hospital (Stockholm) and been a JSPS postdoctoral fellow at RIKEN Genomic Sciences Center (Yokohama). He has also worked in the biotechnology industry as a scientist and consulted for the small biotech industry.
Research Expertise
- investigating gene expression in Parkinson's Disease using mircoarrays and high throughput sequencing approaches
- comparison and analysis of high throughput sequencing datasets
- analysis of alternative splicing in complex organisms
- medical bioinformatics
- classification and prediction of datasets using machine learning approaches such as Artificial Neural Networks, Classification Trees and Support Vector Machines
- design of effective siRNA and Antisense Oligonucleotide molecules for gene knockdown experiments.
- GRID computing for large-scale applications
