Landscaping and Grounds

Landscape section of the Office of Facilities Management provides services to the Griffith University community in the most environmentally friendly and sustainable economical manner possible. From recycling all vegetation , either through mulching through a Chipping machine or composting lawn clippings and leaf material to using the least toxic herbicide to remove undesirable weeds from Ovals and Toohey Forest under our care.

We have many unique species of flora and fauna in Toohey Forest and our management of these assets is reflected in our methods not to pollute or destroy this unique environment. Pest fauna removal is also handled in this non polluting manner by manually trapping and not baiting, which can kill beneficial species. Introduced mulch will bring pathogens from other areas and in time will spread to tree species on site and destroy them so is avoided as much as possible.

Fuel reduction burning is also performed at differing times of the year so as not to advantage any one species of plant, also by using the hot or cool burn techniques prevents any one species becoming dominant. Other factors such as nesting time of birds and flowering of certain species is considered.
