Professor Marilyn McMeniman has held academic positions at both the University of Queensland and Griffith University. She was the inaugural Head of Griffith's School of Languages and Applied Linguistics in 1994-95, served as Dean of Education at Griffith from 1996 to 2001, and was Pro Vice Chancellor (Arts, Education and Law) from 2002-2009. Her main teaching and research interests include publications in the areas of language acquisition, learning and policy; teaching and learning processes (strategic learning and assessment); and motivation to learn.
She has co-authored major national and state reviews and reports relating to language learning, and educational research, the most recent of these being the sole-authored Review of the Powers and Functions of the Board of Teacher Registration, which resulted in the formation of the Queensland College of Teachers, and the 2008 Report on Early Childhood Education and Care. Throughout her career, she has provided advice to governments, to industry and to the wider profession and community. In 1997 she was made a Member of the Order of Australia for services to education in the fields of curriculum theory and practice, language acquisition, research and administration. In 2007 she received the Zonta Woman of Achievement Award. She was a member of the Rhodes Scholarships Selection Committee (Queensland) from 2005 to 2008, and served as a Board Member of the Pacific Film and Television Commission from 2003 to 2007. In 2009 she was appointed as a member of the Queensland Government Smart State Council. She was appointed as a Commissioner of the Crime and Misconduct Commission, Queensland Government in 2011.
