Pro Vice Chancellor (Health)

Contact details for Prof Allan Cripps

Professor Cripps commenced his career as a foundation staff member in the Department of Clinical Immunology at Flinders Medical Centre, Adelaide, in 1976. He later joined the Royal Newcastle Hospital and played a key role in the establishment of a comprehensive diagnostic service in Immunology for the Hunter Health Region. With this vision for regional pathology services, he was appointed as Chief Scientist of the Hunter Area Pathology Service on its formation in 1990 and became its Acting Director before moving to full-time academia in 1994.

In 1994, he was appointed as Dean, Faculty of Applied Science at the University of Canberra where he went on to become Pro Vice-Chancellor (Division of Science and Design), Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research and International) and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) before joining Griffith University in May 2003.

Professor Cripps' key research directions, over the last decade, have focused on developing a vaccine for bacterial infections of the respiratory tract and ear. Drawing on his earlier work on the development of immunity in infants and children and immune mechanisms, he has been able to make a significant contribution to defining the criteria for the development of a successful vaccine against nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis and Streptococcus pneumoniae infections in the airways and middle ear. He has published over 250 research publications in his field and is highly regarded internationally for his work.
