In 2005 DEST changed the definition of a commencing student from “A student is a commencing student if she/he has enrolled in the course for the first time at the institution or an antecedent institution between 1 September of the year prior to the Collection Year and 31 August of the Collection Year.” to “A student is a commencing student if she/he has enrolled in the course for the first time at the higher education provider or an antecedent higher education provider between 1 January of the Collection Year and 31 December of the Collection Year.” where "course" is referred to as program at Griffith University.
