Griffith University Review Framework

In May 2003, Griffith University Council adopted a framework for the regular, five-yearly, systematic, independent review of current activity and future plans of academic elements through a review process. A parallel process for administrative areas was also instituted.

The purpose of reviews is to improve the planning and performance of elements through a continuing cycle of self assessment, benchmarking, critical reflection, forward planning and internal/external peer review. Reviews, therefore, form an important part of the process of planning and review in Griffith University and are predominantly future-focused. In addition to constituting a critical quality assurance mechanism within the University, reviews examine how the element can contribute most effectively to the achievement of the University's strategic goals and objectives.

Each Review Committee is an independent committee appointed by the Vice Chancellor in consultation with the Deputy and Pro Vice Chancellors. Review Committees are charged with providing an objective assessment of the self review and future plans of the element, and with making recommendations for future action and development to the Vice Chancellor. Each Committee is chaired by one of 2-4 external members of the Committee who are distinguished in the relevant field. Two internal members (drawn from an element external to the element under review) and a Committee Secretary (provided by the Office of Quality, Planning and Statistics) complete the Committee.

At the conclusion of each review, the Committee's report, along with the element's Implementation Plan, is submitted to Executive Group, Academic Committee and University Council. Twelve and eighteen month progress reports are required and are also submitted to these bodies.

Overall responsibility for the review process rests with the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) while management of the process rests with the Office of Quality, Planning and Statistics.
