Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is a feature of most undergraduate and some postgraduate degrees at Griffith, whereby as part of your degree program, you gain practical, real-world experience in a work situation relevant to your area of study. This practical dimension complements and extends the skills you are acquiring in lectures and tutorials. It will be supported in class with reflection guided by an academic supervisor about what is observed and learned in the workplace.
The language used for WIL in different programs has some variations. In your program, WIL might be referred to by a name similar to one of the following:
- practicum
- project
- work experience
- internship
- professional experience
- clinic
- Industry Affiliates Program (IAP).
Points to consider about participating in Work Integrated Learning (WIL):
- WIL forms part of the competitive advantage Griffith programs offer you
- WIL opportunities typically occur in the second or third year of your degree but in some programs can occur earlier
- WIL opportunities can sometimes take the form of internships overseas
- it introduces you to the culture of your chosen career - so you can see if it’s right for you
- it gives you insights into your own abilities and helps you to formulate career goals
- it gives you increased confidence and helps you to build your professional identity
- WIL makes you more employable - allows you to develop practical workplace skills in your discipline.
For information about WIL options in your program, please contact your Program Convenor or Margo Baas, Manager, Employer Liaison and Graduate Promotion, m.baas@griffith.edu.au
It is important for you to plan your academic program in such a way that you are eligible for possible WIL opportunities by enrolling in any courses that may be pre-requisites.
