Meeting other students

Two students working together on a computer

Many first years believe that they are the only student who doesn't know anyone. It only takes one brave person to break the ice- and remember every other student you meet will either be in first year, or has been through it!

At University you may only be in classes with people for an hour or two at a time, and then they will all disperse. So, it takes a bit of an effort to get to know people, like introducing yourself to someone in a break, or inviting people for a coffee after a tutorial.

You can get to know people in your lectures, tutorials, and in the library, or even just walking on the way to a class. Attending as many Orientation and School activities as you can will really help to give you a chance to meet people.

Your School may also have a mentoring program that gives you the opportunity to link with a more experienced student. You'll meet students in your course through any group work you do. Maybe you'd like to set up a study group with other interested students.

Getting involved in one of the many University sporting, spiritual or social clubs will link you with other students with similar interests to yours.
