Finding help with assessment issues

Two students reviewing and discussing subject text books

Everyone at University wants you to do well, and continue and complete your studies smoothly. But at some point of your academic journey, life may have other plans!! It's really important to let relevant academic and general staff know you're having difficulties sooner rather than later. Asking for help when problems arise gives you more options and flexibility in managing them. You don't need to tell lecturers and tutors all the details of your personal situation, but you do need to let them know that your circumstances are having an impact on your work, and that you are seeking solutions to get them sorted out.

If you are unable to complete an assessment item due to personal or medical reasons you have some options. Email or talk to your tutor and course convenor to let them know what's happening and what they can suggest. They may be able to give you an extension to complete some work, or defer an assessment item. If you have had some ongoing issues that have impacted on your work, you can apply for special consideration. The University has policies about assessment, and your School may also have procedures you should follow, so consult your course code.

How can I connect with the University about assessment matters?

  • Talk to your tutor, lecturer or course convenor.
  • Consult your course outline for your School's policies on assessment.
  • Consult the University's policies about assessment and note the relevant forms that have to be completed
  • Seek information and support for issues regarding assessment, appeals and grievances. You may need documentation that confirms your circumstances, such as a medical certificate or a letter from a counsellor who knows about your situation. You can also seek information and support to appeal an academic decision or for help with a grievance. The University has guidelines for keeping your personal information private.
