STUDY OVERSEAS with the Griffith Exchange Program!
Did you know you could be eligible to incorporate overseas travel into your university studies as a part of Griffith’s student exchange program? Each year Griffith sends approximately 500 students to one of its 200 overseas partner institutions for one or two semesters and you could easily be one of them!
Juanita went to Spain as a part of the Griffith Exchange program and here is a snapshot of her inspiring journey.
What kind of teaching methods were used in Spain and how did you find the study load?
The majority of the courses did not offer tutorials; only lectures or workshops which did not rely so heavily on technology (so there was little use of power point or lecture audio).
There were also a few classes with no other assessment other than a final exam (which included short answer and essay response questions).
What were the on-campus facilities?
Being Spain, the food was never a problem! There were sports facilities, including soccer fields. Each faculty also had a library with access to computers. There was also a student photocopy shop where you could print or photocopy any needed material.
Describe the accommodation you stayed in.
There were some great options specifically for exchange students and when coming to a city where you don’t know the people or lifestyle, they can be the best way to go! Most people like me stayed on campus at first for the first but once settled looked for an apartment in the city.
Was there an orientation program given at UCM?
There was an orientation program which provided information on the city I studied in and the university. It also included a FREE 2 week language program before our classes commenced.
How did you finance your exchange program?
As an Australian undergraduate I was eligible for the OS-HELPloan. I was also the recipient of a grant from the Griffith Honors College. I also used my personal savings.
What did you do in your spare time?
Being in Europe the one thing on your mind is travel! UCM also did very well to organise trips for exchange students which are cheaper than what you would pay on your own.
Spain has so many amazing things to see and they are all so close. If you’re worried about cash or time, there are many cheap day trips you can do outside of Madrid. Some include; Toledo, Segovia, Avila and El Escorial, just to name a few.
Travelling outside of Spain was easy too! There are so many countries less than 2 or 3 hours away - France, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg, Germany, Italy, Morocco...the list goes on!
Do you have any additional comments from your exchange you think may be relevant to future exchange students?
Go! It can be really daunting to be immersed in another language but make the most of the opportunity. Don’t be too shy or afraid of joining in. I wish I had done more especially in the first few months! Chances are you won’t ever get this opportunity again.
