Who is required to complete the english language enhancement course?

From Semester 1, 2010, the English Language Enhancement course must be completed by all international students enrolling in programs that include an English Language Enhancement course unless the following criteria are met.

  1. Have achieved at least one of the following within the last two years:
    1. IELTS (Academic) of 7.0 with no sub-score below 6.5 (or equivalent);
    2. TOEFL (paper based) 580;
    3. TOEFL (computer based) 237;
    4. TOEFL (internet based) 92 with no score below 22;
    5. At least ISLPR 3+ in each skill.
  2. Have satisfactorily completed one of the qualifications specified in Schedule A to the Admission Policy for Undergraduate Programs.
  3. Have satisfactorily completed within the past 5 years study from Canada (excluding Quebec), New Zealand, Australia, Republic of Ireland, United States or United Kingdom, as follows:
    1. senior secondary study (excluding Foundation program studies) or equivalent where the study duration was at least two years;
    2. post-secondary study where the study duration was at least two years;
    3. VET-Sector accredited certificate, diploma, advanced diploma, or equivalent (eg. TAFE) where the combined program duration was at least two years;
    4. a Higher Education Sector accredited associate degree or degree, or equivalent where the study duration was at least two years.
  4. Have satisfactory completed within the past 5 years at least two years full-time equivalent study in post-secondary, Higher Education Sector accredited associate degree- or degree-level study or equivalent, in a country as specified in Schedule A to the Admission Policy for Undergraduate Programs in which the language of instruction and assessment/examination for the entire two years was in English.

Information detailing the requirements to complete the English Language Enhancement course is contained in sections 1.1 and 1.2 of the Schedule 1 to the Bachelors Degree Policy.

Domestic students for whom English is not their first language may enrol in the English Language Enhancement course as an elective.

The English Language Enhancement course is not available to domestic students who are native speakers of English.

How to enrol

Advice regarding the requirement to complete this course will appear in the Griffith Online Student Centre (To Do List) and International students will be able to access this site when enrolling.

If the Griffith Online Student Student Centre (To Do List) indicates that you need to enrol in the English Language Enhancement course, but you meet the exemption criteria stated above, you can apply for exemption.  Please complete the English Language Enhancement Course - Exemption Request Form, attach documentary evidence of how you meet the exemption criteria, and hand it in to a Griffith International office or a Student Centre (details on the form).
