Often dominant species with other Gahnia spp. on disturbed sites, e.g. old road verges and cuttings in logged wet sclerophyll and simple evergreen vine forests on poor soils. Distributed by birds.
High rainfall areas on nutrient poor soils, e.g. from sandstones, and acid volcanics.
