Natural patterns of rainforest are characteristic of North Queensland wet tropics. Alluvial/colluvial soils support rainforest while shallow soils on upper slopes resulting from erosion events linked with past climatic change plus impacts of frequent cyclones and fire even in this very wet zone (3000+ mean annual rainfall today). See comments under Image 9-1.
