Floristically similar rainforest characterises widely disjunct rocky outcrops across Australia, especially in tropical Australia. Understanding the distribution patterns is a vital key to understanding the time and space scales of evolution of the Australian flora. Gigantic granitic rock piles are a characteristic feature in northeast Queensland, e.g. Cape Melville, Black Mountain near Cooktown, Mt Finnegan, Thornton Peak, Mt Bartle Frere. They often have a narrow range of endemic plants and animals.
