The East Asian Collection in the Nathan Library has been developed primarily to support the teaching and research programmes of the Schools of Modern Asian Studies and Languages and Linguistics at Nathan. The language and subject emphases of the collection consequently reflects the past and current content of these programmes.
The language content of the collection is focused on Chinese, Japanese and Korean language publications, with emphasis on the modern period, particularly the 20th Century. The subject content of the collection is predominantly in the social sciences and humanities, particularly culture, economics, history, language, literature, politics, social conditions and sociology. Geography, philosophy and religion are also fairly well represented. At present there is minimal content relating to science, technology and the environment.
Bi-lingual publications (English-Asian/Asian-English, microforms, newspapers [with the exception of selected Japanese newspapers], maps and government publications [with the exception of those from mainland China,] and legal materials are not included in the collection. Bi-lingual materials are treated as English-language materials and are held in the general book, reference or periodical collections depending on their format.
Government publications from mainland China are included in the collection as it is difficult to accurately identify Chinese government publications. All other Asian language government publications are housed in the Government Publications collection at Nathan.
The East Asian Language Collection is organized in four separate sections; monographs, serials newspapers and reference.
