The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is the official statistical organisation for the Commonwealth, State and Territory governments. Its main function is to collect information on a wide range of Australian social and economic activities, to compile statistics and to disseminate them to Government, the private sector and the community. The ABS produces a wide range of statistical data which are distributed in electronic, microform and print formats.
The majority of ABS data and its publications is now available electronically via the ABS Statistics (AusStats) service. Electronic versions of the ABS print publications from 1998 to date plus over 90,000 time series are available via the ABS Statistics (AusStats) service.
The Gold Coast and Nathan campus Libraries hold significant collections of ABS publications. The collections are held in ABS catalogue number order.
The Nathan Library has been a depository library for ABS publications since 1981 and has a comprehensive collection of the publications of the Central and State Offices. An extensive range of the publications issued by the Central and Queensland Offices prior to 1981 are also available. All ABS publications have the collection prefix Abs and are held as a separate collection in front of the main book collection on Level 2.
The Gold Coast Library has been a depository library for publications of the Central and State ABS Offices since 1991. The collection is maintained as a separate section of the Reference Collection.
Selected ABS publications are also available at the Logan and Mount Gravatt campus.
Print copies of ABS publications, with the exception of annuals, irregulars and compendium titles, are not available in any library collection after 2000. The contents of all ABS publications published after 2000 is only available electronically via the ABS Statistics (AusStats) service.
The ABS collections and datasets cover a wide range of Australian social and economic activities, embracing the following major subject areas;
