The IAP is a Work Integrated Learning program that has been designed to integrate undergraduate and postgraduate students into the workplace to enable them to develop their knowledge and skills in their chosen profession.
Boasting 18 years experience and over 1200 industry placements, the IAP provides final year students the opportunity to develop work-ready skills through the completion of an industry based project designed to deliver meaningful outcomes for organisations.
Through the IAP, industry can engage talented final year Engineering, Information Technology, Multimedia, and Science and Environment students ready to contribute to their organisation.
The IAP is a University course
The IAP is a University course in a student’s degree program. Through successful completion of the IAP students gain credit points and a grade towards the completion of their degree program.
As a University course, students undertake the IAP across a semester for a 14 week period from late February to early June (semester 1) or late July to early November (semester 2). Depending on the IAP course a student is enrolled in, they can work in industry on a project on a full-time (5 days, or 4/4.5 days the weeks a student has on campus activities) or part-time (2 days) basis.
Assessment and tracking
Griffith University manages the program and tracks student milestones and progress to ensure project success and academic outcomes are achieved. Students are assessed on the basis of program deliverables and an individual report. They are also assessed on outcomes produced for your organisation.
Each student is assigned an Academic Advisor who regularly meets with the student throughout the duration of the project to provide guidance and ensure the student progresses satisfactorily. The Academic Advisor will also visit you and the student in the workplace at least once during the project.
In addition to Academic Advisor support students undertake on campus workshops to help them develop a project plan report and manage their projects.
Because of the structured nature of the program and support provided by the University to each student our students have achieved numerous awards and recognition.
Paying the student
The University does not seek salaries for the students, although industry is welcome to pay them. If you choose to pay the student you are responsible for complying with any legal obligations required of employers.
There is a small fee for industry to be involved in the program.
Intellectual property and confidentiality
Intellectual property rights can be assigned to you/retained by you. Confidentiality may be maintained.
What the IAP isn’t
The IAP is not vacation work and is more than work experience. The IAP differs from work experience or vacation work in that students work on a substantial project that consists of a series of planned experiences with clearly defined goals and pre-determined assessment strategies. However, our students are available for work experience or vacation employment outside of the IAP semester.
