I am particularly interested in the context in which worker burnout and engagement develop. I became interested in this area of research during my time as a high school teacher observing the effect on staff of different school administrations. This experience provided me with the inspiration to investigate just how managements of organisations contributed to their workers' exhaustion and cynicism, which was the topic of my PhD.
My employment as a Research Fellow on the Work-Life Balance project has expanded my perception of how people function to an optimal level in the workplace. People (regardless of their family situation) need to have the opportunity to 'switch-off' from work at some time during the day and achieve some psychological restoration. If this doesn't happen it can lead to burnout and reduced working outputs of employees.
