What is Public Health?

Public Health is the study and management of human health in the greater community and environment.

Undergraduate

What is the Bachelor of Public Health?

The Bachelor of Public Health is a multi-disciplinary three-year program that provides the knowledge and skills to work in a wide range of public health professions.

The program integrates knowledge and practice from a range of fields such as environmental health, health promotion and nutrition and dietetics.

Career Opportunities: Depending on choice of major, nutrition, environmental health, health promotion, fields in government, private and not for profit sectors, community health and in health care organisations.

Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health - Continuing students only

Graduates from the BSc in Environmental Health have been employed as Environmental Health Professionals in the public and private sector, especially in the local government area as well as the Defence Forces - Army, Airforce and Navy.

Environmental Health Professionals work in a variety of areas protecting the health and well being of the community and our environment, Food Hygiene and Safety Management, Immunisation, Communicable Diseases Management, Disaster and Emergency Management, Regulation of Accommodation Standards, Health Promotion, Air, Water and Noise Pollution, Quarantine Management and Environmental Health Risk Assessment.

Graduates are eligible for membership into the professional body for Environmental Health Professionals AIEH.

Bachelor of Behavioural Science (Work and Health) - Continuing students only

Graduates in the BBehSc (Work and Health) have found employment in relevant Workplace Health and Safety areas in both the private and public sectors.

Bachelor of Health Promotion - Continuing students only

Graduates from the Bachelor of Health Promotion will gain employment in international health agencies, federal, state or local government departments, non-government, community-based or private organisations, or international health agencies. Graduate roles include health promotion officer, project manager, public health officer, policy officer, community health worker, health coordinator, community development worker or program evaluator. Students will also be well positioned to do honours in health promotion or post-graduate studies in public health, health services management or nutrition.

Graduates may be employed to work with groups such as indigenous people, youth and seniors in the workplace, community, hospitals, schools and other settings. Their work will be on specific community health topics and may include the environment, work/life balance, sexual health, living and working conditions, HIV/AIDS, nutrition, health inequalities, physical activity, and drugs and alcohol.

Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics (1355)  - NEW 2010

Offered full-time at Griffith?s Gold Coast campus, the new Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics degree provides the ideal way to prepare students to become fully qualified and credentialed dietitians in just four years.

This degree focuses on the food we eat and its relationship to the treatment and prevention of a range of important diseases.  Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics will initially study fundamental health sciences including areas such as anatomy, physiology and biochemistry, before completing more advanced studies of human nutrition.

The final stage of the program involves a 20?week professional placement program where students will be immersed in full-time professional practice environments within hospitals and other health facilities where they will gain first-hand experience in the areas of clinical dietetics, public health nutrition and food service management. From 2012, the new Gold Coast University Teaching Hospital will also provide educational opportunities for many Griffith Health students.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics will be well positioned to take up employment within the health industry as a dietitian or nutritionist in settings such as private and public hospitals, community health services, health promotion and public health units and/or in private practice, and food industry.  Career opportunities can also be found managing large scale food services for organisations such as the armed forces and correctional facilities and at major events such as the Olympics.

Honours

Bachelor of Science with Honours in Public Health - Continuing students only

The Bachelor of Public Health with Honours is an important step towards a career in Public Health research. The program takes graduating students from a range of public health-related undergraduate programs across the university, to undertake more specialised and advanced study, and research within the public health field. Admission to the program reflects the interdisciplinary nature of contemporary public health practice. University graduates in all health-related disciplines, as well as those from other Science and Education backgrounds are eligible to apply. The program provides students with a thorough training in applied scientific research and methodology, and will also prepare students for higher degree studies. Graduates from the program will be suitable for employment in universities, government research organisations,hopsitals, and health related industries. Graduates will also be prepared for further postgraduate studies at the MPhil and PhD level.

Postgraduate

Master of Public Health

There are well-established career paths for graduates in the Masters/Graduate Diploma program in Public Health at senior levels of health management, as well as in areas such as epidemiology, health promotion, environmental and occupational health, and international health.

Master of Health Services Management

There is a global shortage of multi-skilled professionals in the field of health services. The system needs people who are more than administrators. What is required is people with talent and training to shape the future of health care. Postgraduate study in Health Services Management at Griffith University can help you take advantage of these trends.

Master of Nutrition and Dietetics and Master of Nutrition and Dietetics with (Honours) Gold Coast Campus

Graduates of the Master of Nutrition and Dietetics and Master of Nutrition and Dietetics with (Honours) will find employment in a range of roles in a range of sectors. These roles will include work as a dietitian/nutritionist in private and public hospitals, community health services, health promotion and public health units and/or in private practice. Opportunities have grown considerably for entrepreneurial dietitians working on a consulting basis to the food and pharmaceutical industries. Graduates will have the entry-level competencies required to succeed in these various employment scenarios and entitlement to professional membership of the Dieticians Association of Australia.
