Research topic title
The policy-practice gap in human resources: Line managers knowledge, attitudes and beliefs about Human Resource practice, and consequences for organisations and individuals.
Description
Most organisations have a range of human resources policies and practices in place. These policies are designed to benefit both employees (e.g. through improved well-being and work-life balance) and organisations (e.g. through improved retention and productivity). Line managers, as the ‘front line’ of management, have ultimate responsibility for implementing most Human Resource policies in organisations. However, a range of evidence suggests that line managers implement policies inconsistently, which can dilute the beneficial effects the policies are designed to have. The main aim of this research is to identify the key influences on line managers’ implementation of organisational Human Resource policy. The overall aim of this research is to provide an evidence-based foundation for interventions to improve consistency in line managers’ implementation of Human Resource policy and practice, and in doing so improve individual and organisational outcomes.
