Clients are referred from their doctors, other mental health agencies, and schools, and may refer themselves to the service.

The Psychology Clinics conduct a variety of assessment, therapy, and research programs for individuals, families, and groups with emotional, behavioural, adjustment, and learning difficulties. Some of the most common problems seen include:

  • depression
  • irrational fears
  • anxiety, aggression
  • family breakdown
  • drug and alcohol problems

Typically, clients are seen once a week for an hour long consultation with the psychologist. A specific course of therapy may last anywhere from one visit to a few months, depending on the problem at hand.

The Psychology Clinics also focus on the promotion of mental health in the community by being involved in and supporting various self-help and prevention programmes. The Psychology Clinics also offer consultancy and advice services to government agencies, the public sector, and other organisations in health and mental health related areas.

The Psychology Clinics have been specifically designed to be used for therapy, teaching of small groups, and supervision of psychology students who are training to be clinical psychologists. These trainee psychologists carry out most of the direct therapy work under the close supervision of the clinical psychology staff in the School of Psychology.
