RN, RM, BAppSc, MN, PhDProf Elaine Duffy

Head of School

Contact details for Prof Elaine Duffy

Professor Elaine Duffy's Nursing career has taken her from London in the United Kingdom, to Kalkuringi, Darwin, Melbourne, Canada, Bathurst NSW and from March 2011 the Gold Coast Queensland. After completing her training as an RN, Certification as a Midwife and a Diploma in Tropical Diseases, Elaine came to the Australian outback and took up the position of Senior Rural Health Nurse for Indigenous Health in Kalkuringi and Darwin which suited her burgeoning interest in Indigenous Women's Health.

After remaining in the Northern Territory for six years, Elaine moved to Victoria to work as a Community Health Nurse and then lecturer and senior lecturer, taking up the position of Deputy Head of School, at the Caroline Chisholm School of Nursing which enabled her to follow another interest which is the retention of health care professionals in rural areas. This provided the ground work for Elaine to focus on coordinating the Master of Nursing programme at Monash University and promoting postgraduate studies for Nurses and the building of partnerships with health care providers. This appointment at Monash opened the doors for Elaine to become an Associate Professor and Associate Director of the Monash University Centre for Rural Health in La Trobe's historical town of Moe and Traralgon, rural Victoria. Elaine finished her employment with Monash University in 2003 as the Acting Head of School of Rural Health after 16 years.

From the rural landscape of Victoria to the waterfront of the Detroit River, the University of Windsor, Ontario, Canada was next on Elaine's career itinerary where she took up the post of Professor / Dean, Faculty of Nursing and oversaw multiple campuses and developed the nursing disciplines research output and skills.

In 2006 Elaine took the position of Head of School of Nursing, Midwifery & Indigenous Health at Charles Sturt University where she was able to pursue all three of her main interests regarding the difficulty in recruitment and retention of health care professionals in rural areas, Indigenous women's health and building partnerships with health care professionals and organisations in rural and regional areas.

In April 2011 Elaine took up the position of Head, School of Nursing and Midwifery at Griffith University.
