Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery

The Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery program is a four year graduate entry program. The program focuses on four major themes: Doctor and Patient; Knowledge of Health and Illness; Doctor and Health in the Community and Doctor and Law, Ethics and Professional Practice.

Career outcomes

A degree in medicine provides a pathway to multiple career opportunities, including specialist clinical practice, primary care medicine, medical research and medical education.

Professional recognition

Graduates from the Griffith program will be eligible for limited registration as medical practitioners. On successfully completing a subsequent one year internship in a hospital system, they will receive full registration by the State Medical Board. After completing at least one further year of residency in the hospital system, graduates will usually be eligible to start postgraduate specialty training in the clinical environment.

Bachelor of Medical Science

The School of Medical Science will be hosting this program which will provide secondary school leavers with an intensive two year degree that, on maintaining a GPA of at least 5.00 for the program, allows guaranteed entry into the Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery.

Master of Legal Medicine – Under review, no new enrolments for 2008

This program is designed to complement and enhance the knowledge of professionals who work in the clinical and administrative areas of health care.

Career outcomes

Graduates seek employment in management, administrative and policy making positions within the health care sector. They will be prepared to consult both industry and government on matters involving law and ethics in the delivery of health care services.

Graduates can expect increased professional recognition and an enhanced ability to provide leadership at institutional and government levels in relation to health law issues.

What are the admission requirements?
Admission criteria include:
  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree, achieving and overall GPA of 5 or above on a 7 point scale
  • Performance in a recognised Medical School Admissions Test ie. GAMSAT
  • Performance in a structured interview
How do I apply?
All applications must be submitted through the Graduate Medical Admissions Centre at ACER by the published deadlines.
Can any postgraduate studies be included in the GPA calculation?
No. Only grades in the qualifying undergraduate degree are used to calculate the GPA.
Can I transfer from one medical school to another?
Transfer of enrolment between graduate-entry medical schools is not possible except in exceptional circumstances and only with the approval of the Deans/Head of School of the two schools involved.
Can I claim exemptions or advanced standing for previous studies?
No applicant will be admitted to the graduate-entry medical program with advanced standing and exemptions from participating in part of the program will not be offered.
Which hospital do students attend to receive clinical training and practical experience?
Clinical placements occur in public and private hospitals including Gold Coast, Logan, Tweed Heads, QE2, Allamanda, Pindara, Wesley or Murwillumbah Hospitals.
Are there any scholarships available for the MBBS?
There are a number of different scholarships available.
