Community organisations

We engage with community organisations in providing a wide experience of health issues in the community for students in education about the important role of community organisations with the following objectives:

  • contribute to the local community
  • develop knowledge of the social perspective of health and disease
  • develop knowledge of non-medical pathways of health service provision and support
  • experience the value of community
  • develop a more holistic approach to medicine in general
  • develop a broader perspective of health care

Our support for the community

Blood bank

Our medical students have been instrumental in the establishment of an intercampus challenge to increase much needed blood donations on the Gold Coast. The extra incentive involved in an intercampus challenge has provided a boost in donations.

Multiple Sclerosis Society of Queensland

Our medical students started their participation in the Gold Coast Airport Marathon in 2005 helping to raise approximately $600 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Queensland.  This participation continues each year raising further much needed funds.

Patients

We welcome community members to 'act' as a patient. This involves the pretence of an ailment with students asking questions and examining patients. Training is provided.

Patients with a current condition

Members of the community who currently have a medical condition and would be willing for the students to examine them, or who would like to talk to students about their condition and their experiences. This will require your GP to pass your information and contact details on to the School of Medicine.

Bequests

Members of the community who would like to donate their bodies for research and learning can obtain more information by contacting Anatomy Support Officer, School of Anatomy on (07) 5552 7700.
