Dental technology combines the art and science of the dental world. The dental technician is often the unseen creator of complex devices used to restore colour, form and function of the oral cavity and surrounding facial areas. As a student you will learn to work collaboratively, via laboratory prescriptions, with dentists, specialists or prosthetists (denturists, clinical dental technicians) to fabricate oral prosthesis and appliances such as:
- removable complete acrylic dentures
- removable alloy partial dentures
- mouthguards
- splints
- crowns and bridges
- orthodontic appliances
You will spend many contact hours with experienced staff in the prosthetic laboratory learning the art and science of creating oral prosthesis and appliances. You will also attend lectures into the theoretical concepts, design, material science, function and aesthetics of such devices.
As well as studying and working alongside students of dentistry you will gain:
- hands-on practical training in the laboratory with dental materials, beginning in first year and broadened over the following two years
- real-world experience working with registered dental technicians in the University's modern commercial laboratory
- placements that allow for the application of learned skills
- access to world-class facilities located at the Griffith University Centre for Medicine and Oral Health in the Southport health precinct on the Gold Coast
