The history of the GUMURRII Student Support Unit
In 1986 Griffith University established the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student Support Unit.
In 1988 Griffith University increased enrolments and retention of Indigenous students and further reduced Indigenous attrition rates through existing student support mechanisms.
With the annexation of Mount Gravatt, Gold Coast, Logan and South Bank Campuses, Indigenous student support was offered on all campuses.
In 1993 the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student Support Unit was renamed to the Griffith University Murri and Islander Centre. Due to recent restructuring, the Centre is now known as the GUMURRII Student Support Unit.
The acronym GUMURRII is derived from Griffith University Murri (Queensland Aboriginal people) and Torres Strait Islanders.
Griffith University now has a GUMURRII Student Support Unit on all 5 campuses.
