Work-in-Progress Conference

For all research higher degree students (including Honours) Friday, 03rd April 2009.

Call for abstracts

The Work-in-Progress Conference is back. Now an annual feature, it gives all research higher degree students at Griffith University, including Honours students, from all schools and disciplines, an opportunity to present their research in a supportive and interdisciplinary research environment.

The Conference will provide:

  • an opportunity to practise your presentation skills in front of an interdisciplinary audience, and receive valuable feedback from an expert panel
  • an opportunity to rehearse for any upcoming seminars, conferences, or confirmations
  • the needed motivation to reject, modify, assume, or prove ideas using your previous knowledge and experiences
  • an excellent way to meet and network with other research higher degree students and help overcome isolation.

Presentations can be in the form of oral presentations or posters. See guidelines below for each style. Authors must indicate their chosen style of presentation on their form. The Best Paper and Best Poster presentations shall receive a prize.

Guidelines for oral presentations:

  • Oral presentations will be for 20 minutes, followed by a 10 minutes question time
  • The presentation should be such that general technically-literate readers will understand the problem being tackled, and appreciate the importance of the material presented.

Guidelines for poster presentations:

  • Posters can be of any size (generally minimum A2, maximum A0)
  • The poster framework or layout should indicate to the attendees the reading order
  • Use clear labels for each section of the poster
  • Make sure the poster is reader-friendly, i.e. is it clear and concise? Can you draw attendees to your poster? Can colleagues quickly examine the poster and understand its major points? Would an interested attendee learn enough from your information to ask informed questions? Does it stimulate conversation?

Abstracts are to be no longer than 200 words and must be accompanied by the application form. Please do not submit an abstract if your attendance at the conference is not certain.

Application forms can be downloaded and must be submitted at the Association Office at Level 1, Community Centre, Nathan QLD 4111, or emailed to the conference chair - S.Khanna@griffith.edu.au by 5pm on Friday 7th, March 2008. Acceptance notifications will be sent out by 17th March 2008 to the first authors.

  • Application form (Doc 49k)

It doesn't matter whether you are a postgraduate research, or honours student, the conference will give you the necessary motivation and confidence to present your papers and invaluable feedback to help you improve your presentation skills.
