Your responsbilities regarding waste and recycling
It was estimated that over 50% of the "waste" in this skip (pictured) is recyclable. It contained a significant amount of cardboard, paper, wooden pallets, old furniture, computer towers and monitors, laboratory equipment and fluorescent tubes (which contain mercury) all which are recyclable and able to be disposed of on campus. The waste in this skip will be taken directly to landfill - by separating the wastes into their different waste streams and respective facilities the waste will be recycled and large skips (pictured) would be unnecessary. This diverts tonnes of waste (and toxic chemicals) from landfill and reduces disposal costs for the university as many of the recycling services (e-waste, paper and cardboard) are free.
Please do not dispose of your electronic equipment in the general waste stream. Please ensure that any contractors during refurbishment or maintenance are aware of the e-waste, fluorescent tube, cardboard and paper recycling facilities on campus. Also ensure that Campus Life provides adequate facilities (easily identified in a convenient location) to ensure efficient disposal.
