E-waste
Electronic waste includes all computers, mobile phones, televisions and monitors. Cathode ray tube televisions and monitors contain approximately 2.5 kilograms of lead amongst other contaminants. If these electronic items are not disposed of properly they may be exported to the third world for processing in conditions lacking sanitation, protection from contaminants and environmental regulation.
50 – 80% of e-waste collected in the USA for recycling went to developing nations. One US estimate says e-waste accounts for 70% of heavy metals in their landfills.
Role
Employees have a commitment to ensure that all electronic equipment (computers, monitors, televisions, mobile phones, desk phones etc.) are recycled and disposed of in an environmentally sensitive manner.
