Laboratory teaching

Learning and teaching in laboratories (labs) is a key part of the curriculum in fields such as science, medical or health science or engineering. Laboratory teaching or demonstrating requires a number of specialised skills including a working knowledge of all aspects of the lab and adherence to key health and safety procedures. This role brings with it many responsibilities and challenges, as well as rewards.

The lab teacher or demonstrator is expected to have a number of skills, including:

  • applying effective small group teaching techniques to involve and manage students in the lab
  • being familiar with the curriculum content, goals and intended outcomes
  • understanding how to manage students in the potentially high-risk lab environment
  • asking questions to probe student understanding
  • modelling the scientific method and processes when needed
