Clinical teaching

Clinical teaching is a unique form of interaction between teacher and student in health professional education. It is designed to prepare students to work with patients or clients in the medical or allied health fields and typically revolves around a health problem to be addressed. Teaching may occur in real-world clinical settings, such as hospitals or consulting rooms, or in simulated settings using role play.

Clinical teaching is a highly specialised form of teaching. It is based on experiential learning principles where the teacher or ‘expert’ models a procedure, followed by the learner repeating the steps of the procedure, with guidance and feedback, until key steps and skills are mastered. Clinical teaching aims to develop professionalism among ‘novice’ students, along with the skills of clinical reasoning, decision-making and empathy.

Clinical teaching may occur in real world or simulated settings.
