Beginning academics

If you are a new full-time or contract member of academic staff, and have little or no teaching experience in higher education, the University has developed a compulsory intensive two-day Foundations of University Teaching series designed to orientate you to your new teaching context.

It provides an opportunity for you to become acquainted with the University’s strategic learning and teaching priorities and to explore a range of practical strategies for enhancing your classroom practice and curriculum design. It also enables you to network with colleagues and learn from fellow academic staff members. This two-day, intensive mode program is presented by the GIHE three times each year. Key topics include:

  • Understanding student learning in higher education
  • Designing learning opportunities to enhance engagement and student outcomes
  • Optimising student learning in small groups
  • Effective teaching in large classes
  • Practical strategies for enhancing assessment and feedback
  • Tips from experienced colleagues: A panel of effective teachers share strategies for good practice
  • Evaluating your teaching and documenting your teaching practice

Registration is essential for all GIHE professional development events and staff are advised to register early to avoid disappointment. To register for any of the programs advertised, please  respond to gihe-register@griffith.edu.au with your name, school and contact details.
