Casual academic staff workshops

Casual academic staff are vital to the learning and teaching activities of Griffith and are valued members of the University's academic community. If you are a casual academic staff member new to teaching in higher education, GIHE offers a Casual Academic Staff New to Teaching (PDF 514k) workshop which provides an essential orientation to learning and teaching at Griffith.

To enhance your teaching experience, the University requires that all new casual academic staff attend this four-hour workshop, or an equivalent program offered by your School or Faculty. The workshop is offered at the Nathan, Mt Gravatt and Gold Coast campuses and provides a valuable opportunity to meet other Griffith colleagues, learn from a panel of existing casual staff who will share helpful hints and tips, and collect useful resources to guide you in your teaching. Topics includes:

  • an overview of learning and teaching priorities at Griffith;
  • an introduction to learning and teaching in higher education;
  • strategies to enhance student learning and engagement in large classes and small groups;
  • tips for managing diverse student cohorts;
  • practical ideas for assessing student learning;
  • approaches to providing meaningful student feedback; and
  • tips on evaluating and improving your teaching practice by seeking student and peer feedback.

Registration is essential for all GIHE professional development events and staff are advised to register early to avoid disappointment.
