Research based learning
Griffith is committed to innovation and to embedding research in its academic programs. We are also committed to a culture of evidence-based practice. These commitments are reflected in the application of research-based learning approaches in learning and teaching activities across the disciplines.
Research-based learning is an approach to program design and implementation in which students have the opportunity to make intellectual and practical connections between the content and skills that characterise their programs, and the research approaches and frontiers of the underlying disciplines.
Research-based learning at Griffith may take a range of forms including:
- Systematic introduction of disciplinary related research into the course content and teaching.
- Use of inquiry-based processes modelled on the research approaches common to the discipline.
- Inclusion of research methodology courses in the undergraduate program.
- Design of learning activities based on authentic research problems in the public domain that involve engagement with the wider community. Griffith uses the term public scholarship to describe these activities.
The GIHE contributes to the development and implementation of research-based learning at Griffith and offers support for academic staff in the form of:
- a university-wide workshop on implementing research-based learning and public scholarship; and
- a Good Practice Guide on research-based learning: Successfully linking teaching and research
Resources on the Teaching-Research Nexus for academics and policy-makers.
Research-based learning policies:
Research, and the subsequent creation, validation and dissemination of knowledge, are fundamental to the operation of a research-intensive university. The intention of research-based learning is that university academics make positive moves to help students build strong intellectual and practical connections between research frontiers and the students’ own learning.
