Learning and teaching resources

The GIHE collaborates with academic colleagues to implement the University's learning and teaching priorities. These priorities are designed to foster successful student learning experiences and outcomes. They promote learning environments and teaching practices that are inclusive, engaging, challenging and grounded in scholarship and evidence.

Effective university teachers need to make use of a wide array of strategies to engage students from diverse backgrounds and who may be undertaking higher education studies at very different stages of their professional careers. Further, academic staff may be required to teach across different contexts, from large lectures to small groups, from laboratories to clinical and workplace settings. In order to enhance learning across all these settings and within disciplinary contexts, the most successful university teachers are committed to developing their understanding of such issues as:

How students learn:

  • Strategies for engaging students
  • The role of background factors and motivation in student learning
  • The learning needs of particular student groups including international students or indigenous students
  • The role of peers in learning and assessment
  • How to use assessment and feedback to enhance learning

The GIHE produces a range of resources offering practical strategies and tools for effective teaching to enhance the quality of student learning and outcomes in a broad range of contexts. Resources and links on this website include Good Practice Guides, toolkits and scholarly references in areas such as assessment, graduate outcomes, internationalisation, research-based learning, curriculum design and evaluation.
