Tony Fry Tony Fry BA (Hons), MA, PhD is a designer, design theorist, cultural theorist and educator. Tony is a director of sustainability consultancy Team D/E/S, Adjunct Professor, Queensland University, Queensland College of Art, an independent scholar and a contributing editor of the e-journal Design Philosophy Papers and the e-zine Design Philosophy Politics. He is also a farm forester and lives at and works from his and his partner’s farm at Ravensbourne, in the ranges of south east Queensland.
Tony was the founding director of the EcoDesign Foundation, Sydney (1991-2001) and formerly Adjunct Professor, Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building, University of Technology, Sydney, (1998-2001); Honorary Research Associate, University of Sydney (1996-2001); Associate Director. University of Sydney National Key Centre of Design Quality (1991-92); Senior Lecturer in Design History and Theory, Power Institute, University of Sydney (1985-96). He has held visiting professorships, lectureships and fellowships at universities in Australia, Asia, Europe and the USA. He has also run many professional development courses and seminars for the Royal Australian Institute of Architects.
As a consultant Tony has worked in many areas of design, sustainability and futures for the corporate sector, professional organisations and government. These included: BHP, the Institution of Engineers Australia, the former Australian Federal EPA, New South Wales State EPA, New South Wales Departments of Urban Affairs, Planning, Housing and State Development, The Learning Federation and the South East Queensland Western Catchment Group. He was an environmental design manager for several Sydney Olympics venues, has worked with many of Australia’s leading architects. He has been a member of award winning design teams and judged numerous design and architectural competitions.
Tony carries out numerous speaking engagements. For example, in the past two years he has spoken at: the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the University of Chicago, Chicago Architectural Federation, DePaul University, the University of Indiana, the Future Cities Conference, Brisbane, the Brisbane Ideas Festival, the Global Earth Dialogues, Brisbane, Global Eco-Design Dialogues, Cairns, the ‘2050 national young leaders’ conference, Melbourne and at Los Angles Museum of Art and Architecture.
Tony is the author of seven books, has edited three, has essays in sixteen collections and has over 200 published articles and conference papers. His latest book – Design Futuring is to be published internationally in late 2008.
