Scope
The GJE is open to any contributor whose work qualifies for publication based on academic rigour and peer review. Contributors would include: new and established researchers; students within their postgraduate, honours or other research candidatures; and students in advanced studies or special projects in environmental disciplines, in areas such as policy and law, engineering, planning or social and biophysical environmental sciences. For some applied research projects, members of the public, private and community sectors may be collaborative authors.
The GJE publishes the following types of articles:
- Original research papers: Good communication of research in most cases is achievable between 4500 and 5500 words in length (excluding tables and figures). However for some research, longer papers may be necessary and are acceptable provided they have been thoroughly edited by the author. Papers should display interdisciplinary integration of theoretical or applied research. Given the scope of the GJE, research papers may fall into general categories of research reports, research essays or case studies.
- Shorter reports between 1000 and 1500 words in length. Reports should deal with current practice, issues, research, environmental legislation and new initiatives in environmental science, studies, law and policy (editorial reviewed only); and
- Reviews of printed materials, electronic media, and other relevant material of between 600 and 1000 words (editorial review only).
Review
The GJE will be peer reviewed as per the requirements for registration outlined in the 2005 Higher Education Research Data Collection, Department of Education, Science and Training. An editorial board will recommend appropriate reviewers who have expertise and research leadership in a particular area, or assist with review of papers. When submitting their Online Submission Form a contributor may choose to nominate a reviewer whom they consider has expertise in their area of research.
It is the responsibility of the contributing author to ensure papers have been edited to a final form before submission. The Editors cannot accept and send out papers for peer review which clearly are in need of editing or are excessively long.
Frequency
The GJE will be published by issue (approximately six articles per issue). An article will be published online in the current edition once it has been accepted with changes. From time to time the GJE may publish as an issue a special edition on a theme, or research papers from a conference, where these meet the academic review process. The publication date of an article and its citation details will appear as a header on the first page of each article.
