The GJE provides a Griffith University faculty-based mechanism for new researchers, students as well as established research academics, to demonstrate their intellectual and research skills. The GJE offers the opportunity to display high levels of skill with respect to written communication and academic abilities (critical thought and evaluation). It is not confined to researchers in any particular institution, but rather, is distinguished by its focus on environmental issues, interdisciplinary and integrated content, and its encouragement of new researchers and collaborative research effort.

Articles for the GJE are intended to focus on environmental issues and problems, and span a number of disciplines within Environment, including Environmental Studies, Environmental Planning, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Law and Policy and Applied Environmental Sciences. The articles need to demonstrate the ability of the author(s) to integrate research from the physical, natural and social environments. The scope of the journal suggests that a wide range of research methodologies and analyses may be appropriate, while research confined to a specific disciplinary context may be better suited to a more specialised journal.

Collaborative approaches to interdisciplinary problem solving are encouraged, although not essential. It is expected that many of the published papers will involve joint authorship, involving academic staff, students within their postgraduate, honours or other research candidatures, or students in advanced studies. Equally, new researchers are encouraged to publish individual research. For some applied research projects, members of the public, private and community sectors may be collaborative authors.

The GJE will be peer reviewed as per the requirements for registration outlined in the 2005 Higher Education Research Data Collection, Department of Education, Science and Training. The GJE will be published by issue (approximately six articles per issue). An article will be published online in the current edition once it has been accepted with changes. From time to time the GJE may publish a special issue on a theme, or research papers from a conference, where these meet the academic review process.

The Griffith Journal of the Environment is encouraging submissions of papers to be included in the current issue of the GJE.
