Student opportunities

Group of people looking through microscopes

We provide training and education to fulfil the needs of both the academic sector and the horticulture industry. This approach provides information to a greater audience who can then use it for research or practical programs.

By adopting an approach that allows students to gain both practical field skills and academic excellence, we are dedicated to guiding future entomologists in their respective careers.

Postgraduate study

Postgraduate study leading to MPhil and PhD degrees at our Centre is open to both Australian and international students. Students are directly supervised by our academic staff but also have access to co-supervision by other specialist academics within the Griffith School of Environment.

Additionally, we also encourage students completing postgraduate study at other tertiary institutions to participate in short-term research in our laboratory (1 - 2 semesters). Such a research program is usually organised through scholarships or other funding negotiated by the student.

Regional training

Another channel used for training is short-term workshops and certificate courses, as these are easily accessible to horticulture personnel with or without tertiary academic training.

We have held successful training workshops for farmers and other horticultural workers in the following locations:

  • Brisbane, Queensland
  • Cairns, Queensland
  • Darwin, Northern Territory
  • Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
  • Long Dinh, Vietnam
  • Papua New Guinea

These workshops are tailored to focus on fruit fly species relevant to the community, and we provide information on methods of taxonomic identification, quarantine, and environmentally safe pest management.
