About us

EcoCentre building with sustainable design situated in the Toohey forest

Our mission

To be an innovative and dynamic information and resource centre promoting:

  • Sustainable development
  • Environmental education and research
  • Community partnership

The EcoCentre is a key element of the University's Science, Environment, Engineering and Technology group. As part of the School of Environment and Planning, we promote an encouraging message that the knowledge, existing framework and resources to develop a truly sustainable world already exists.

The building itself acts as our primary education tool, with features that incorporate the key principles of sustainable design.

Our innovative approach to promoting sustainable ways of living and working also involves the development and delivery of public awarness education programs in partnership with industry, government and the community.

History

Occupied by staff in November 2000 and opened officially on World Environment Day, 5 June 2001, over 120,000 people have visited the EcoCentre since it's opening. In that time a wide range of people and organisations have participated in environmental education activities, exhibitions and launches or attended seminars and workshops including:

  • International visitors
  • School children
  • Conference delegates
  • Industry representatives
  • General public
  • Community groups

Location

Located on the Nathan campus, the EcoCentre is situated within Toohey Forest. This magnificent area of remnant natural bushland is only 9 kilometres from the Brisbane City Centre. At its widest part it stretches over 4 kilometres east from Moorooka to Mt Gravatt, and over 2 kilometres south from Tarragindi to Robertson.
