URP research wins Planning Institute of Australia awards

Research conducted by the URP's A/Prof Darryl Low Choy has been recognised by the Planning Institute of Australia. At the 2008 awards function A/Prof Low Choy's investigation into peri-urban development won the PIA Award for Excellence in Planning Scholarship, Research and Teaching. The award committee found the research "develops an innovative typology of spatial settings, links them to landscape management challenges and identifies possible institutional arrangements. It is supported by a sound methodology and extensive understanding of previous research and literature."

Additionally, A/Prof Low Choy's work on natural resources management futures received a merit citation; as did his third year student group for their work on climate change in South East Queensland.

Enrique Peñalosa public seminars

7-8 February 2008, Ian Hanger Recital Hall, Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, South Bank

Enrique Peñalosa is the charismatic former Lord Mayor of Bogota, Columbia. He is recognised worldwide for his efforts transforming this city of seven million into a benchmark for sustainability, active transport, recreation and health.

The two seminars showcase his bold and controversial vision that turned a city for traffic into a city for people. As a result, Bogota now has a world-leading public transport system, 300 km of bicycle and walking trails, and a green network of 1200 parks and quality public spaces.
