Research Expertise and Interests

Dick Drew is the current Centre Director for The International Centre for the Management of Pest Fruit Flies. The Centre and his research focuses on topics related to the taxonomy, biology/ecology, speciation, biogeography, and pest management of fruit flies in the family Tephritidae.

In addition to this research, Professor Drew has developed and directed many international agricultural aid projects throughout the Pacific, Asian and Southeast Asian regions over the past 20 years.

Current Research Areas

Professor Drew is currently researching:

  • Systematics of the fruit fly fauna of South East Asia and Papua New Guinea and writing an extensive Monograph on the S. E. Asian fauna.
  • Biogeography and Speciation of Tephritidae, including molecular studies on species with Professor Jane Hughes.
  • Host Plant Ecology of fruit fly species.
  • Use of attractant baits for fruit fly field control to reduce pesticide levels in food crops and the environment
