The study is separated into three components:
1. Monitoring
An intensive bi-hourly water quality monitoring program was undertaken to provide calibration data for the computational models and a snapshot of the water quality throughout the tidal cycle. Throughout the hydrodynamic monitoring phase, Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers were deployed to collect current data during the intensive water quality monitoring program and for further extended periods.
2. Modelling
Hydrodynamic, spectral wave and advection dispersion models have been calibrated and applied to simulate a range of operational and environmental scenarios. The MIKE by DHI suite of models were utilised, including a hydrodynamic model, advection dispersion model and incorporation the of a spectral wave model.
3. Decision Support System
A next generation decision support system, based on world best practices, has been developed to provide the wastewater treatment plant operators with the capability of optimising the release of recycled water. It is a user friendly interface that incorporates local environmental conditions, real-time tidal data and current weather forecasts.
