Conference support

The Environmental Futures Centre provides its researchers and postgraduate students with support through funding up to $300 for national conferences and up to $800 for international conferences (Conditions apply). Apply by completing the following Conference support application form.

Research grants and assistance

The Environmental Futures Centre provides several research grants and incentive schemes that support our postgraduate students through their research. These include Honours grants, Summer Studentships, Postgraduate Publication Incentive Scheme, Postgraduate Write-up Scholarships and Best Paper Awards. Please visit our Student Opportunities page for more information on how to apply.

Conservation tools

We conceive and participate in the development of new and better tools to achieve nature conservation. As with the production of all good on-ground, user-friendly conservation tools, EFC conservation tools have been developed in collaboration with researchers, government agencies, industry and community members. For access to these tools please visit our Publications page, Griffith Research Online, The South-East Queensland Fire and Biodiversity Consortium Resources or contact centre administration for a hard copy.

Kick-start research grant scheme

This competitive scheme aims to provide an opportunity for the development of new and innovative research directions for the Centre, whilst supporting our researchers at what they do best. We are not currently taking applications for this grant.

Short courses/workshops

The Centre offers short courses to its research students. These include a Multivariate Primer course and Experimental design and statistics course.  Both courses run each year except when enrollments are too low.

Primer workshop

Three day multivariate (PRIMER) workshop runs on the Gold Coast mid July each year. The estimated cost for the three days is $200 (includes all food/tea/coffee, lecture/workshop handouts, example datasets, and the use of the PRIMER program). Members of research centres may be able to approach their centre directors for help with the cost of this workshop.

Experimental design and statistics

Postgraduate course in Experimental design and statistics runs late February to early March each year. The course is available to honours students, higher degree students and external students from industry. It is a two week intensive course (9am-5pm, Monday-Friday) held at Griffith University, Gold Coast Campus. No prior knowledge in statistics is necessary.

The primary purpose of this course is to provide a firm basis in experimental design and an understanding of the philosophy of statistics that will allow students to apply these elements to their own research. It gives students practice in understanding statistics and experimental design (using computer exercises on data they collect) that allows them to critically review the literature relevant to their area of research. In the final 3 days of the course students apply concepts of experimental design to their own research projects.

Enrollment costs are approximately $970 (normal fee for a 10 credit point course) and include the textbook used in the course. A maximum of 20 students are allowed and enrollment is on a first come first serve basis.
