This theme has a focus on sustainable landscapes and resource management in tropical horticultural and forestry systems to enhance economic, environmental and social benefits in a changing environment. This includes;
- tropical plant biotechnology for crop improvement and adaptation,
- seed science and cryopreservation for germplasm conservation and use,
- particularly rainforest fruits and crop wild relatives,
- biogeochemical cycling and carbon sequestration in terrestrial ecosystems,
- ecosystem responses and adaptation to global changes,
- forest ecosystem management,
- sustainable use of land resources,
- mined site rehabilitation and
- the beneficial re-use of urban and industrial waste materials in agricultural and forest landscapes.
The development and application of innovative techniques and best management practices are also critical to developing effective climate change adaptation strategies and options. These research areas intersect with the Centre’s other themes in conservation science, ecological restoration and management, social policy and climate change adaptation.
