The Program for Planned Biodiversity Studies concept was developed by the Brazilian Ministry of Science and Technology (Ministrio da Cincia e Tecnologia). It resulted from the Ministry of Science and Technology's recognition of their national responsibility under the Convention on Biological Diversity.
This recognition was coupled with an understanding and awareness that studies of biodiversity needed to be integrated and conducted over large areas, to provide meaningful long-term data through which effective biological biodiversity could be achieved. Thus, along with its Institutes and their partners, The Program for Planned Biodiversity Studies Brazil was established.
The Program for Planned Biodiversity Studies' scope and agenda is wide, including:
- surveying, monitoring and assessment of sites
- collection development
- biodiversity commercialization applications
- strengthening regional centers
- capacity building of human resources
